Backyard is an initiative project by Samara, Airbnb’s experimental product development studio, exploring new ways for homes to be designed, built, and shared.

Panter&Tourron had the opportunity to bring their industrial design expertise to Samara, collaborating with an eclectic team of engineers, designers, architects, filmmakers, strategists, material specialists, and business developers. Together, they worked to give shape to new products and services that extend Airbnb’s values of openness, generosity, and trust beyond travel and hospitality.

Driven by a humanistic, future-oriented, and waste-conscious approach to design, Backyard investigates how homes can respond to changing needs over time. The project explores the potential of sophisticated manufacturing techniques, smart-home technologies, and insights from the Airbnb community to imagine more adaptable and responsible forms of living.

Beginning with a simple but ambitious question — what does a home designed and built for sharing look and feel like? — Backyard reflects on the evolving relationship between people, space, and time. It considers how architecture can support different ways of living, accommodate diverse human experiences, and adapt to a world in constant transformation.

Through this collaboration, Panter&Tourron contributed to a broader research project that looks beyond the object itself, questioning how design can shape new models of domestic life, shared space, and future housing.
