Couch in an Envelope

Couch in an Envelope is a speculative design exploration by SPACE10 in collaboration with Panter&Tourron, rethinking the couch as a lighter, more adaptable, and more responsible object for people and the planet. The project uses AI to question the conventions of today’s couch, imagining an alternative that is easy to transport, flexible in use, and designed to stand the test of time.
The project began with a simple question: why do so many couches still follow the same archetype — bulky, cushioned, heavy, and difficult to move? Together with SPACE10, Panter&Tourron experimented with AI to challenge the norms and biases embedded in furniture design. When prompted with the word “couch”, AI tools repeatedly returned familiar forms. By shifting the language towards ideas such as “platform”, “lightweight”, “sustainable”, “recyclable”, and “easy to move”, the process opened up new possibilities for a more circular and contemporary design.
Traditionally, couches are among the most demanding objects in the home. Their size and weight make them difficult to store, move, and transport, while their many components often make them hard to recycle. As a result, they can be energy-intensive to ship and frequently end up in landfill at the end of their life.
In contrast, Couch in an Envelope is imagined as a lightweight and modular seating system for contemporary living. A flat base and adjustable wings allow it to adapt to different needs, postures, and spaces, while multiple units can be combined to create larger seating landscapes. Conceived in aluminium, cellulose-based fabrics and yarns, and mycelium foam, the couch is designed to be recyclable, stackable, easy to disassemble, and simple to move, extending its lifecycle through flexibility and reduced material use.
