Kit
2022
Kit is a collection of stained ash furniture designed by Panter&Tourron for the third edition of Designew. Comprising a chair, bench, and table, the collection takes its name from the studio’s interest in assembly and structures, recalling childhood passions for model building and wooden construction kits.
Responding to the edition’s theme, “Correct Incorrect”, translated as “Tolerating Errors”, the project explores the perception of majestic and voluminous forms in relation to the methods and materials usually required to produce them. “Kit” proposes a series of generous wooden objects made from industry-standard panels and slats, using standard bending and cutting processes to avoid heavy milling and unnecessary material loss. What is often perceived as a lesser design approach, seemingly opposed to ideas of “form follows function” or “truth to material”, becomes here a sustainable response to questions of material scarcity and regeneration.
The collection’s monolithic forms are constructed with the minimum number of elements and resources. Their design recalls the structure of an aircraft wing, with an assembled skeleton of interlocking parts developed to maximise stability while reducing material use and weight.
Designew 2022 was curated by Mario Tsai Studio and presented during Shenzhen Creative Week 2022.
